The test flight of the German Isar Aerospace rocket "Spectrum" on March 30 marks a milestone. Lasting only 30 seconds, the flight was extremely short, but historic nonetheless. It was the first launch of a carrier rocket from the European continent.
For Germany and Europe, however, the launch of SpaceX's competitor was about much more: independent access to space, an important economic sector of the future. By 2035, global space travel is expected to generate a massive increase in revenue, with numerous new business models (see chart).
So far, Donald Trump's "first buddy" Elon Musk has dominated commercial space travel with his company SpaceX. Recently, however, it has become increasingly clear how important alternative concepts are for Europe's independence. Space has become a battleground for the exercise of geopolitical power, and the militarization of space has been gaining momentum for some time.
The FERI Cognitive Finance Institute was quick to analyze these new trends: Two of our publications deal with the question of who is involved in the new global "space race" and what is shaping the new "space cold war".
