October 2024: The future trend of e-mobility: Germany is falling further and further behind

Bad Homburg, 10/1/2024

The mobility turnaround in Germany - towards more electric vehicles - is increasingly failing to achieve its goals. This is clearly reflected in the ratio of newly registered vehicles with battery electric drives (BEV) to total registrations. The share of BEVs has fallen to just 10-15% in the current year 2024; it is therefore significantly (up to -57%!) below the comparative figures for the previous year.

As a result, the EU Commission's ambitious transformation targets, with a “ban on combustion engines” from 2035, appear increasingly unrealistic. This setback has been triggered by delays in the development of the charging infrastructure, lower state subsidies and the lack of competitiveness of many BEV models. The recent mood of crisis among German car manufacturers, with sharp profit warnings and massive restructuring, is a clear reflection of this unpleasant scenario.
